Robert Francis Prevost was elected as the next pope of the Roman Catholic Church on May 8, 2024, making him the first pope from the United States, according to The New York Times.
Provest chose the papal name Leo XIV, The New York Times reported.
“It is a very exciting time for the church and the USA,” Fr. Tom Dente, Pastor of Notre Dame Church in North Caldwell, said in a statement via email.
In Dente’s email, he said “I am sure that he will inspire Catholics, Christians and all people of good will toward greater holiness and be a prophetic voice shining God’s light into the dark places of our world. Prayers this night for Pope Leo XIV!”
“I am excited by the Election of Pope Leo XIV,” Monsignor Sam Sirianni of the Co-Cathedral St. Robert Bellermine said in an email.
“Although I feel he will continue Pope Francis’ efforts in areas of immigration, care for the environment, and the margins, Pope Leo will have his own style in leading the Church.” Sirianni continued, via email.
“I never thought I would see an American Pope,” Sirianni also said in his email.
In an emailed statement, David M. O’Connell, the Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, said:
“Today, the Diocese of Trenton rejoices and gives thanks to God for the election of our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. This momentous occasion marks the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the Church, filled with hope and renewed commitment to our faith.”
